You have to love an artist with a sense of humor. In an era where it seems impossible to protect any work of art from being leaked out on to the Internet (from scripts to half-finished songs to entire albums people are simply too impatient these days), Ben Folds found a way to avoid anxiety over what would happen to his highly anticipated new record.
He leaked it himself. Only, he didn’t really; he leaked six fake songs purported to be on the new album, hoping to give his die-hard fans a little thrill and have some fun in the process. He gathered his band around one day, telling them their goal was to come up with eight songs in nine hours. They had an enormous amount of fun, according to an interview he gave recently to Rolling Stone. And it’s easy to imagine why. With the pressure off them to create something truly good, they could screw around in the studio and experiment, which is always a good thing for artists to do anyways.
That’s not to say all the songs are throw-away digital junk. Bitch Went Nutz, a song about a callow boyfriend who brought his impassioned, liberal date to his work party only to be embarrassed is a very catchy (and funny) song. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Folds said he really liked it, and has already added it to his MySpace profile. It’s really perfect for release on the radio, if some of the language gets bleeped out (the party referenced in the song’s lyrics doesn’t go well, as you can imagine).
Kudos to Folds on turning the leaky music industry around in his favor. But even while trying to do so, he found some difficulty: His friends who tried to upload the songs to certain sites found administrators would delete them in fear of being sued.
Whether you got fooled by the fakes or not, you should see this artist perform live by getting some Ben Folds tickets.
