Nottingham has a rich history of live music, with a diverse mix of venues clamouring to showcase the latest local, national and international sounds. From the Trent FM Arena and the city’s purpose-built concert halls to live mic nights at the pokiest of pubs, you’ll find plenty of acts lining up to entertain every night of the week.
The 2,500-seater Nottingham Royal Concert Hall and 9,500-capacity Trent FM Arena often host some of the biggest names in popular music. Whether your ear-tipple of choice be chart-topping divas, big-production dance acts or nostalgic grunge comebacks from a more youthful age, chances are if they’re on tour they’ll be on in Nottingham.
Nottingham’s reputation in the music world leans heavily on its teenage alternative scene. Rock City has been driving this movement over the past three decades, launching, rediscovering and rocking some of the world’s most influential acts including Nirvana, Blur, Oasis, Iron Maiden and Pearl Jam. This grubby but well-loved concert venue has recently buddied-up with Rescue Rooms, The Bodega Social Club and Stealth to secure first refusal on the coolest underground and mainstream acts on the road.
Bar Seven strives to crowbar some of the biggest names into this dinky venue to engineer a more intimate live music experience. Despite its compact dimensions, Bar Seven’s reputation secures some of the biggest names in rock, metal, glam, punk and indie. Those fortunate enough to get a ticket will never be more than fifty feet from the stage and within a few strides of the bar.
Smaller acts and those preferring an even more diminutive stage pretty much have their pick of hostelries at which to perform. Many of Nottingham’s pubs and bars dish up an element of live entertainment, bolstering the city’s reputation for championing an eclectic mix of music. The ancient Ye Olde Salutation Inn defies its quaint roots by hosting some of the city’s dirtiest rock outfits about. You could even try your hand at rock karaoke if there’s no live act on your night.
Another deceptively weighty rock hole is the Old Angel Inn. A marked contrast to its Lace Market neighbours, this traditional drinkers’ pub famously hosts live music within its underground caves. With a track record of breaking the most exciting and quirkiest new acts, the Old Angel hosted little-known names like Kasabian, Oasis and the Arctic Monkeys long before Trent FM Arena came a-knocking.
Another venue exploiting the unbeatable acoustics of underground caves is the Loggerheads Pub. Once the hideaway of legendary highwayman Dick Turpin, it’s now content to conceal its live acts for the enjoyment of its faithful followers.
Drop down another gear and the legendary open mic nights at the Golden Fleece might hit the right note. Here, local musicians rub microphones with up-and-coming singer/songwriters for an unique insight into the future direction of Nottingham’s freshest sounds.
You may come here seeking live music or stumble upon a set that strikes a chord. But either way, you won’t fail to notice that Nottingham is buzzing with all manner of acts and venues each adding to its rich tapestry of tunes.
